Rinnoji Temple

Nikko's most important Buddhist temple, founded in the 8th century by the monk Shodo Shonin. The main hall (Sanbutsudo) houses three gilded Buddha statues, each over 8 meters tall, representing deities of the three sacred Nikko mountains. The Gomado (Fire Ritual Hall) is where monks perform daily goma fire rituals, an esoteric Buddhist practice where wooden prayer sticks are burned to purify and grant wishes. The ornate Kuromon (Black Gate) was the private entrance for feudal lords. The Shoyo-en garden behind the main hall is a strolling garden designed around a central pond, particularly stunning during autumn foliage season when maples blaze red and gold. Rinnoji is part of Nikko's UNESCO World Heritage shrine and temple complex and is typically visited alongside Toshogu and Futarasan Shrine.
